Bariatric Surgery for Raleigh, NC Patients

At Bariatric Specialists of the Carolinas, we are dedicated to helping Raleigh residents and those in surrounding communities achieve lasting weight loss and improved health. Our board-certified bariatric surgeons use advanced robotic surgical techniques to deliver safe and effective bariatric care. Whether you’re just beginning to explore bariatric surgery or ready to take the next step, our team is here to answer all of your questions and guide you through the entire process.

Start Your Journey

Your first step is a personal consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. During this visit, we’ll:

  • Review your health history and weight loss goals
  • Discuss bariatric procedures suited for your unique physiology
  • Introduce you to our care team, including nurse navigators and care advocates who will support you before, during, and after surgery

We’ll also review the financial aspect of reaching your health goals.

If you’re a North Carolina State Health Plan member, you may qualify for no-cost bariatric surgery through the Lantern Network of Excellence. This state-based program provides:

  • Access to experienced, rigorously vetted bariatric surgeons
  • Comprehensive support throughout your surgical journey
  • No out-of-pocket costs for qualifying members

Our goal is to make the process as clear and stress-free as possible, whether you’re pursuing insurance approval, self-pay options, or Lantern coverage.

Planning Your Surgery

Step 1: Schedule and attend your initial consultation.

Step 2: Surgery day at our nearby surgical center! Our team will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare before surgery and what to expect during recovery.

Step 3: Focus on healing.

Depending on the type of procedure (gastric bypass, SADI, duodenal switch), you will spend a day or two in the hospital for monitoring before you go home. Once home, you will gradually increase your activity level over the next 6 weeks. You will also receive instructions regarding your diet and how to graduate from liquids to solid foods.

Have a Trusted Companion Available

Whether you live around the corner or an hour away, patients should have someone available for at least 48-72 hours after surgery to help with:

  • Driving, especially on surgery and release days
  • Mobility and basic care
  • Medication management
  • Emotional support

Patients with additional medical conditions or mobility concerns will benefit from having a companion present for more than a few days.

Surgery Aftercare

Bariatric surgery is just the beginning, and long-term success depends heavily on:

  • Maintaining recommended nutrition and supplement routines
  • Mental health and emotional support
  • Regular follow-ups with the surgery team, dietitian, and your regular healthcare providers
  • Community encouragement and support groups
  • Getting consistent physical exercise

You are encouraged to start walking, carefully, as soon after surgery as possible. Walking every 2 hours promotes healthy circulation and helps with the healing process. While sitting, especially for long car rides, be sure to flex your legs, rotate your ankles, and lift your knees to get blood flowing to those areas and to prevent blood clots. Investing in compression stockings to support circulation will help immediately after surgery and well into the future.

Be sure to stay hydrated. With the excitement of surgery and the post-operative instructions that follow, it can be easy to forget to drink water. Aim for 64 oz. per day, and do that in small sips throughout the day. Your stomach pouch will be smaller and can only handle a small amount at a time.
