Bariatric Surgery for Charlotte, NC Patients

At Bariatric Specialists of the Carolinas, we proudly serve patients in Charlotte and surrounding communities who are seeking long-term weight loss through bariatric surgery. Our board-certified bariatric surgeons specialize in advanced bariatric procedures designed to improve health, mobility, and quality of life. From your initial visit to follow-ups years down the road, our team is here to support you.

Your Journey to Better Health Starts Here

Your initial appointment allows us to get to know you and build a plan that’s tailored to your needs. During this visit, we’ll:

  • Review your health history and weight loss goals
  • Discuss surgical options based on your unique health needs
  • Introduce you to our care team, including nurse navigators and care advocates who will support you before, during, and after surgery

We’ll also review the financial aspect of reaching your health goals.

For eligible North Carolina State Health Plan members, you have access to bariatric surgery at no cost through the Lantern Network of Excellence. This state-based program provides:

  • Access to experienced, rigorously vetted bariatric surgeons
  • Comprehensive support throughout your surgical journey
  • No out-of-pocket costs for qualifying members

Our goal is to make the process as straightforward and manageable as possible, whether you’re pursuing insurance approval, self-pay options, or Lantern coverage.

Planning Your Surgery

Step 1: Schedule your initial consultation and meet the team.

Step 2: Surgery day at our nearby surgical center! You’ll receive clear instructions on how to prepare beforehand and what to expect immediately after surgery.

Step 3: Focus on recovery and healing.

Depending on the type of procedure (gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, SADI, duodenal switch), you will spend up to two nights in the hospital for monitoring before you go home. After returning home, you will gradually increase your activity level over the next 6 weeks, and you’ll receive detailed guidance on post-operative nutrition as you progress from liquids to solid foods.

Enlist the Help of a Trusted Companion

Even for patients who live nearby, it’s important to have a chaperone available for 48-72 hours after surgery to help with:

  • Transportation on surgery and discharge days
  • Assistance with mobility and daily activities
  • Medication reminders
  • Emotional encouragement during early recovery

Patients with additional medical conditions or mobility concerns will benefit from having a companion available for more than a few days.

Surgery Aftercare

Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but long-term success depends on continued care and healthy habits, including:

  • Following prescribed nutrition and vitamin supplementation plans
  • Addressing mental and emotional well-being
  • Attending regular follow-up appointments with your surgery team, dietitian, and primary care provider
  • Staying engaged with support systems
  • Incorporating consistent physical activity into daily life

Walking every two hours is recommended as soon as it is safe to do so to promote healthy circulation and the healing process. When sitting for extended periods, especially during car rides, remember to flex your legs, rotate your ankles, and move regularly to support blood flow and reduce clot risk. Investing in compression stockings to support circulation will help immediately after surgery and well into the future.

Be sure to stay hydrated. With the excitement of surgery and the post-operative instructions that follow, it can be easy to forget to drink water. Aim for 64 oz. per day taken in small, frequent sips throughout the day to accommodate your smaller stomach pouch.
