Surgery Aftercare
Bariatric surgery is just the beginning, and long-term success depends heavily on:
- Maintaining recommended nutrition and supplement routines
- Mental health and emotional support
- Regular follow-ups with the surgery team, dietitian, and your regular healthcare providers
- Community encouragement and support groups
- Getting consistent physical exercise
You are encouraged to start walking, carefully, as soon after surgery as possible. Walking every 2 hours promotes healthy circulation and helps with the healing process. While sitting, especially for long car rides, be sure to flex your legs, rotate your ankles, and lift your knees to get blood flowing to those areas and to prevent blood clots. Investing in compression stockings to support circulation will help immediately after surgery and well into the future.
Be sure to stay hydrated. With the excitement of surgery and the post-operative instructions that follow, it can be easy to forget to drink water. Aim for 64 oz. per day, and do that in small sips throughout the day. Your stomach pouch will be smaller and can only handle a small amount at a time.
