Bariatric Surgery for Wilmington, NC Patients – Coming Soon!

At Bariatric Specialists of the Carolinas, we welcome patients from Wilmington and other coastal North Carolina communities. Our board-certified surgeons specialize in advanced robotic bariatric procedures, and our team works closely with patients to make the process as seamless and supportive as possible.

No matter if you’re just starting to learn about bariatric surgery or ready to take action, our team will walk you through every step and answer all your questions.

Your Journey Begins Here

It all starts with an initial consultation, where we take the time to understand your medical history and goals. During this visit, we will:

  • Review your health history and weight loss goals
  • Discuss surgical options best suited to your physiology
  • Introduce you to our care team, including nurse navigators and care advocates who will support you before, during, and after surgery

We’ll also review the financial aspect of reaching your health goals.

For eligible North Carolina State Health Plan members, bariatric surgery is available at no cost through the Lantern Network of Excellence, which offers:

  • Access to carefully vetted, experienced bariatric surgeons
  • Coordinated care and patient support throughout the surgical process
  • No out-of-pocket expenses for qualifying members

Our goal is to make the process as clear and easy to navigate as possible, whether you’re pursuing insurance approval, self-pay options, or Lantern coverage.

Planning Your Surgery

Step 1: Start by attending your initial consultation.
Step 2: Surgery day at our local surgical center! You’ll be fully prepared with our guidance.
Step 3: Rest, recover, and focus on your post-surgery healing.

Depending on the type of procedure (gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, SADI, duodenal switch), you will spend up to two nights in the hospital for monitoring before you go home. During the first six weeks at home, you’ll slowly increase your activity level. You’ll also follow a stepwise diet plan, moving carefully from liquids to solids as your recovery progresses.

Bring a Trusted Travel Partner

Patients should plan to have a companion available for 48-72 hours after surgery to help with:

  • Transportation to and from the surgical center
  • Assistance during early recovery
  • Medication reminders and basic daily care
  • Emotional encouragement and accountability
  • Tracking post-operative instructions

Patients with additional medical conditions or mobility concerns will benefit from having a companion who’s available for more than a few days.

Surgery Aftercare

Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but long-term success depends on consistent follow-up and healthy habits, including:

  • Attending scheduled follow-up visits
  • Following prescribed nutrition and vitamin supplementation
  • Maintaining regular physical activity
  • Staying connected to supportive communities and managing emotional health

We encourage every one of our patients to connect with a support group in their local community. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference it makes surrounding yourself with people who understand this process. And of course, our care team will be available to answer questions and provide guidance whenever needed.
